Opportunity for Additional Revenue from Your Solar Installation!

Join over 500 other solar installations in New England actively participating in the renewable energy market

Like a power plant spread across the countryside, Mass Energy has over 500 solar and wind installations across MA and RI totaling almost 3000 kW in capacity. Mass Energy includes the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) from these solar or wind installations in our New England GreenStartSM product, which we offer to customers of National Grid. We also have a partnership with the Cape Light Compact (www.capelightcompact.org). This allows consumers without their own solar or wind installation to support renewable energy through the purchase of RECs to offset their conventional electricity usage at home. By participating as a REC supplier, you help support the emerging renewable energy market and generate some extra revenue from your solar or wind installation.

Selling your Green Power Tags/Renewable Energy Certificates to Mass Energy

In addition to saving money on electricity bills, you can receive a revenue stream from the Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) produced by your solar or wind power installation. Here’s how:

In 2008, we are offering to purchase solar and wind certificates from Massachusetts and Rhode Island at a specified rate per kilowatt-hour for three years. For every 1 kW of PV, you might expect about 1200 kWh per year.  The output for wind depends on your location.  Your installer should be able to provide an estimate.

Residential sellers will get an email reminder to report their production once every three months.  You simply read your meter and forward that number to our office.  To reduce the transaction costs, automatic 3rd party reporting is required for all non-residential installations and all residential installations over 10kW.

What are Solar Certificates or Renewable Energy Credits?

When electricity is generated, two separate “products” are created: 1) the electrons which flow over transmission and distribution wires and into the homes and businesses of electricity customers; and 2) the environmental attributes or Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs), associated with those electrons. Accounting for RECs is critical to the process of determining the source and impacts of electricity usage, as well as “leveling the playing field” between clean sources of energy and fossil fuels.

The market for certificates from renewable energy sources is growing in New England. This market is driven by two key factors. First, electricity suppliers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island need to comply with state-mandated “Renewable Portfolio Standards” (RPS) In addition, some electricity suppliers, such as Mass Energy and the Cape Light Compact, are entering the market to sell electricity generated from wind and solar to consumers who voluntarily want to support clean and green power.

Your renewable energy attributes or RECs will be packaged together with those from other renewable sources and sold to customers who are willing to pay a premium price to support clean power. Once your green attributes are sold to Mass Energy, they cannot be claimed by any other electricity supplier, and cannot be used by electric utilities to meet renewable energy mandates. Therefore, when customers purchase New England GreenStartSM, they will help build demand for additional renewable energy projects in the region.
