Energy Assistance Programs
There are a number of resources available to low-income households in Massachusetts. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) provides eligible households with help in paying winter heating oil bills (or any other heat source). Both homeowners and renters are eligible for LIHEAP as long as the household income does not exceed 200% of the Federal Poverty level.
Any household that applies for fuel assistance can receive a free Mass Energy membership as well. As a duel member of Mass Energy and fuel assistance, you will pay whichever price is lower on the day.
But there are more energy assistance programs available for low-income households through the state:
Heating System Repair Assistance: The HEARTWAP Program (Heating Emergency Assistance Retrofit Task Weatherization Assistance Program) is designed to provide heating system repair and replacement services for low-income households. These services will keep the heating system running efficiently and safely. Unsafe or inoperable systems will be completely replaced, and tune-ups are often paid for through this program.
Home Energy Efficiency: The cheapest energy, of course, is the energy you don’t use. The Weatherization Assistance Program (WAP) is designed to assist low-income households reduce their overall energy use. Typical work includes insulation, weatherstripping and air sealing at no cost to the occupants.
Phone, Electricity and Gas Assistance: Eligibility for Heating Assistance may entitle customers of the electric (non-municipal), gas, and local telephone companies to a discount on their service rates.
